The Department is responsible for the formulation and implementation of the national policies and legalization to ensure the safety of life and ships at sea, development of shipping industry, maritime education and certification of seafarers to Conducts the examination and issuing the certificates for seafarers in accordance with the regulation of I/2 under the convention of STCW as amended.

The Czech Republic, also known as Czechia  the capital is Prague , The Czech Republic became a Member State of the European Union on 1 May 2004. and joined as Member state of International Maritime Organization (IMO) in year of 1993 , at the same year the Maritime Directorate of the Czech Republic is formed which is also known as the Maritime Administration Office, under the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs, Government of Czech Republic.  

Maritime Directorate of the Czech Republic (MDCR) ,  performs the function of National Maritime Administration and is the focal point for coordination with International Maritime Organization (IMO). It is the regulator of maritime sector and oversees implementation of IMO Conventions besides providing technical assistance and input to the Ministry of Transport and Maritime Affairs in policy making and legislation. It also issues licenses to the manning agencies and maritime training institutions, undertakes inquiries and investigations into shipping casualties and accidents and is the principal examiner of Masters and Mates and Marine Engineers.
